Healthier Food Swap Ideas

Craving bad for you food? Try these healthier options instead! I think it’s important to note that swapping out processed crappy food for a healthier version or processed food shouldn’t be deemed as healthy. BUT I do think it’s nice to have alternatives for when the craving hits, and you just want a treat!

SWAP OUT SUGARY SODA FOR ZEVIA

Zevia is a zero calorie drink, naturally sweetened with stevia. They’re a great substitute for you go-to soda! They have a handful of flavors similar to your favorites. I’ve tried the Cola and Dr.Zevia and really like both! Cola tastes almost identical to a Diet Coke!

Compared to a typical can of Coke with 39 grams of sugar, you can feel WAY better about grabbing a Zevia instead!

SWAP OUT CANDY FOR SMART SWEETS

Smart Sweets are the best option when you just NEED some candy in your life! They’re free from artificial sugar, sugar alcohols, naturally flavored and colored, packed with plant based fiber and actually taste good! They have a variety of options similar to your candy favorites! I have tried every flavor and love them all. But my top 3 are peach rings, sweet fish & sour blast buddies.

With less than 5 grams of sugar and only 100 calories you don’t feel guilty eating the whole bag!

SWAP OUT ICE CREAM FOR NONDAIRY/ LESS SUGAR VERSIONS

Can you tell I have the biggest sweet tooth? Give me all the candy, ice cream, chocolate… ALL OF IT! Unfortunately sweets are packed with uh, well… sugar haha. So, gotta find some good alternatives! Depending on what you’re in the mood for, I listed below my favorites! I’m not completely dairy free, but when I buy ice cream I either do DF or if it’s dairy I pick the lowest sugar option!

  • Yasso greek yogurt bars
  • Enlightened bars (I LOVE the vanilla dark chocolate almond)
  • Nada moo dairy free ice cream (this is the creamiest texture I’ve found!)
  • Ben & Jerry’s Non dairy frozen dessert
  • So Delicious coconut milk non-dairy dessert

SWAP OUT REDBULL FOR CELSIUS

I have always raved about Celsius Energy drinks! They’re a healthy energy option, and great for workouts! Although they don’t taste like a redbull, if you’re looking to kick your terrible energy drinks try Celsius next time!

SWAP OUT FLOUR TORTILLAS FOR SIETTE BRAND

My friend Kenzie shared about these, and I was instantly intrigued! They have a few flavor options, but I’ve only tried the almond and cassava flour! They don’t taste like almond or coconut necessarily, but compared to a typical flour tortilla, they do have a different flavor. I keep mine in the fridge, and use a little butter to crisp them up! I only cook them about 10-15 seconds, and that’s about perfect. If you cook them too long they will fall apart!

I find mine at HEB in the gluten free/ health aisle in the freezer! I’ve also seen them at Sprouts.

SWAP OUT FLAVORED YOGURT FOR HIGH PROTEIN/ LOW SUGAR YOGURT

I eat yogurt and granola almost every single morning, and have for almost two years. Once I started to pay attention to nutrition facts, I realized the current yogurt I was eating had almost 20 grams of sugar! WHAT.

I’ve tried a few different brands since, and my favorite is the 2G brand. I love all the flavors but the mango hibiscus and peach are my all time favorites. Each cup has only 2 grams of sugar, 80 calories and 12 grams of protein!

SWAP OUT STARCHY PASTA FOR CHICKPEA OR VEGGIE PASTA

This is the easiest swap, in my opinion because you don’t really taste a difference with swapping pasta! Since you’re typically eating pasta with some type of sauce, the flavor of the pasta isn’t all consuming!

I love the Banza brand for chickpea pasta, and Ronzoni for veggie pasta!

SWAP OUT DIPS FOR MUSTARD OR HUMMUS

Recently I saw a Tik Tok with a girl dipping raw veggies in mustard, and she was raving about how good it was and how mustard is a good dip option. I guess I’m late to the mustard party, but did you know it has 0 calories?! I’ve been eating mustard in place of ranch both as a dip, and a dressing!

Also, hummus is a great dip and dressing option as well! Full of protein, hummus is a great filling snack!

SWAP OUT CHIPS FOR HEALTHIER BRANDS

I’ll be honest, my guilty snack is not chips. But, I know there’s so many chip obsessed people out there! If anything I could eat a whole box of Cheese It’s in one sitting. So I do feel you on the crunchy, terrible for you snack.

First option for a better for you chip is to try the baked version of whatever is your favorite! Most baked chips have less fat and salt compared to their counterpart. But, typically the fat and sodium isn’t much lower. So always a better option but doesn’t mean you can blindly eat the whole bag!

Next, you can try a veggie chip, or popcorn chip! There’s so many brands out there, so you should be able to find one you love!

Stay away from the Kettle chips! Depending on the flavor they contain a ton of fat, and sodium!

SOME OF MY FAVORITE BRANDS

  • Sunchips Multigrain snack
  • Quest Protein Chips
  • Bare Veggie chips
  • Hippeas Chickpea snacks

Let me know all of your favorite healthy items you swap for!
